Carol Fetherston – President

President

Mezzo-soprano Carol Fetherston brings extensive musical experience to Opera Nanaimo. As one of the organization’s founding members, it is her vision to bring appealing operatic works to all mid-Vancouver Island music lovers. Born in Vancouver, she obtained an A.R.C.T in piano, a BA in Music from the University of British Columbia, and sang with the Vancouver Opera Association. In 1975, she was accepted into the University of Toronto’s Opera School, and, while there, she studied voice with such prominent coaches and teachers as Elizabeth Benson-Guy, Stuart Hamilton, and Dixie and Ross Neil. Her performance roles included Suzuki (Madama Butterfy), Carmen (Carmen), Madellena (Rigoletto), Nickolaus (Tales of Hoffman), Lola (Cavaliera Rusticana), Principessa (Suor Angelica), Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Frugola (Il Tabarro), Flora (La Traviata), and Old Maid (Old Maid and the Tief). While working as a choral director for the Toronto Board of Education, Carol obtained her MA in Music from the University of Toronto. She studied vocal pedagogy and choral conducting with Doreen Rao, and also worked with the Elmer Eisler Singers, the choir-in-residence at the University of Toronto. Since coming to Vancouver Island, Carol has performed as a soloist with the Malaspina Singers, the Parksville Community Choir, and the Cowichan Consort. Currently, she is at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music as a voice teacher/coach. Her other achievements of note include musical director/conductor for Opera Nanaimo’s production of Amahl and the Night Visitors; music director/accompanist for Hansel and Gretel; music director/accompanist for Echo Players’ production of Pirates of Penzance; music director/accompanist for Opera Nanaimo’s Voices in the Vineyard; rehearsal/orchestral accompanist for Vancouver Island University’s production of Sondheim’s Into the Woods.
